School/Center Overview

The World’s First Business School

In 1881, American entrepreneur and industrialist Joseph Wharton established the world’s first collegiate school of business at the University of Pennsylvania.

Wharton’s pioneering vision was to produce graduates who would become ‘pillars of the state, whether in private or in public life.’ The Wharton School maintains a long tradition of educating visionary business leaders in academia, business, government, and not-for-profit organizations.

Today, Wharton has expanded the scope of this vision to become the most comprehensive source of business knowledge in the world – with over 225 faculty members, 95,000 alumni, 5,000 students across 10 academic departments, 20 research centers, and more than 9,000 executive education participants annually.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Operations will be responsible for strategically building, executing and maintaining our student/alumni programs, non-data corporate partnerships, creating a strategy and overseeing implementation of communication and marketing materials for the center as well as being financially responsible for the center. As the center builds itself out as a presence in customer analytics for industry, students and other organizations, this role would be the hub of the creation of new programs for students and alumni as well as the source for proposed strategies in marketing and communications for the center. The role will also be the hub of operations and finances for the initiative. Specifically, this role works with alumni at every level in organizations to engage them with the center and with current students. The Director of Operations will work to identify companies that the center can engage through creation of content, student activities, thought leadership and recruiting of Wharton students. The Director will work with the WCAI Research arm to source trainings for Wharton students in analytics as well as find new ways to create cross collaboration in analytics with other Wharton and Penn academic departments and centers. The role will also be responsible for the initiative’s finances, HR functions and day-to-day activities.

This position has a dual reporting relationship and reports directly both to the Department’s Executive Director and the Vice Dean of Finance and Administration.

A Bachelor’s Degree and 5 years to 7 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Ability to multi-task is essential as well as the ability to interface with people of all levels and types of organizations effectively. Needs to have the ability to envision new programs and strategies in for the center as well as oversee communications materials and see them through to full and successful implementation for the initiative. Able and willing to be responsible and accountable for a wide breadth of different types of tasks concurrently. Some work in the evenings and/or weekends and some travel may be required.
