School/Center Overview

The World’s First Business School

In 1881, American entrepreneur and industrialist Joseph Wharton established the world’s first collegiate school of business at the University of Pennsylvania.

Wharton’s pioneering vision was to produce graduates who would become ‘pillars of the state, whether in private or in public life.’ The Wharton School maintains a long tradition of educating visionary business leaders in academia, business, government, and not-for-profit organizations.

Today, Wharton has expanded the scope of this vision to become the most comprehensive source of business knowledge in the world – with over 225 faculty members, 95,000 alumni, 5,000 students across 10 academic departments, 20 research centers, and more than 9,000 executive education participants annually.

The Associate Director of the Wharton Leadership Program is responsible for four major job functions as part of the Wharton Leadership Program. (1) Manage operations, planning, and delivery for the Leadership Fellows Program and Individual and Learning Team Developmental Experience. (2) Manage all aspects of the Leadership Fellow Program to include screening, selection, training, briefing/debriefing learning team and individual student mentorship experiences and end of year transition. (3) Support the development and implementation of the first year development and team-based experiential learning experience to promote understanding of effective leadership behaviors and teamwork practices. (4) Manage the operations, planning, and delivery of the first year Pre-Term experience. Support the Director in the content development and design for the Pre-Term offerings.

A major responsibility of the Associate Director of the McNulty Leadership Program is primarily responsible for the design and delivery of the Leadership Fellows. In this capacity, the Associate Director guides the strategic development of the Leadership Fellows Program for Wharton full time MBA students. Responsibilities include: recruiting, training, and managing participants in the program; working with staff, faculty, and vendors to design and deliver training; managing the institutional relationships with VIP donors; developing students through feedback and coaching; and working closely with the Director to design and deliver the Learning Team experience central to MBA Pre-Term and beyond. The Associate Director is also responsible for cultivating relationships with LF alumni and developing programming for these key stakeholders, including opportunities for LF alumni participation in current LF programming.

Leading the Leadership Fellows Program and supporting the Individual and Learning Team Developmental Experience at this pivotal moment necessitates the review and evaluation of past projects, outreach to past and prospective alumni, faculty, and community participants, and negotiating the purpose and scope of the Leadership Fellows so that they meet the needs of the MBA Program. Working with the Leadership Fellows Program requires managing important external relationships with university donors and important young alumni.

The Associate Director functions expertly in dynamic, team-based environment with rapidly-changing priorities and also collaborates with individuals at all levels of the organization. In addition, this position supports senior executives to work flexibly to meet the needs of multiple stakeholders. The Associate Director functions fully as a member of the McNulty Leadership Program team, and participates in the team-based events, advocacy, and outreach necessary for the development of the Wharton Global Leadership Institute.

Bachelor’s degree and 5-7 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience in evidence-based leadership development, talent management and teamwork training. Master’s degree strongly preferred. Proven and effective project management skills and experience with multiple priorities. Demonstrated ability to work well with key organizational stakeholders such as C-level executives, tenured university faculty, MBA students, and University leadership to create solutions meeting the needs of all parties. Ability to work both autonomously and in a team based environment. Excellent organization, communication, and analytical skills required. Strong Microsoft Office skills, especially in Excel and Power Point, are needed and experience with Qualtrics and/or Salesforce is a plus. Experience supporting senior leaders in dynamic environments.
