School/Center Overview

Division of the Vice Provost for University Life (VPUL) is Penn’s foremost provider of student services and educational access. VPUL partners and collaborates with diverse organizations across many dimensions including: race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, historical tradition, age, religion, disabilities, veteran status, interests, perspectives and socioeconomic backgrounds. We enhance the ability of nearly 25,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students, along with other community participants. University Life programs provide academic and career support, campus and community engagement, health and wellness programs, and much more. Our efforts help to fulfill Penn’s strategic vision of integrating knowledge across campus. VPUL is part of the Office of the Provost and includes 32 campus departments.


The Director has overall responsibility for the office, the staff, and oversight of Penn’s historic fraternity and sorority system, which includes 50+ nationally affiliated chapters. The Director has responsibility for leadership development, supporting and guiding individual members and chapters; advising governing councils; organizational accountability and discipline; staff recruitment, training, and supervision; continuous communication and collaboration with all inter/national offices and chapter alumni/ae advisory boards. The Director will partner with VPUL departments, Facilities and Real Estate Services and Campus Apartments in overseeing fraternity and sorority residential facilities, Division of Public Safety, Office of Student Conduct, and other University divisions to meet the needs of Penn’s student population who join the fraternity and sorority system. The Director reports to the Associate Vice Provost for Student Affairs and works within the Vice Provost for University Life Division.


A Master’s Degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education or a related field and at least 10 years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Must have supervisory experience; a background in strategic planning and/or organizational culture change; and experience working within an academic, rigorous and complex university organizations

Prospective candidates should possess a familiarity with educational goals and the social needs of fraternities/sororities and/or other values-based organizations; a strong background in leadership development; expertise in developmental program design and implementation strongly encouraged; experience in judicial oversight and precept of student self-governance; knowledge of the structure, policies and protocols of the national fraternal coalitions (NPC, NIC, NPHC, NALFO, NAPA), particularly as they relate to campus organizational oversight; the ability to relate to all segments of the University community; strong written and oral communication skills; an understanding of corporate relationships and the role of alumni within a large private University environment; a strong aptitude for public relations is helpful. Fraternity or sorority membership and experience is strongly encouraged.
