School/Center Overview

The Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania is the oldest and one of the finest medical schools in the United States. Since its founding in 1765 the School has been a strong presence in the community and prides itself on educating the leaders of tomorrow in patient care, biomedical research, and medical education.


Penn Neurodegeneration Genomics Center is hiring a Research Specialist A or Research Specialist B to work in the lab performing a variety of molecular biology techniques. Primary responsibilities will be function validation of enhancers using a variety of techniques including luciferase reporter assays and validation of SNVs and SVs from NGS data via Sanger Sequencing and Real Time PCR. Other opportunities include library preparation for next generation sequencing experiments (RNA-Seq/ChIP-Seq/Hi-C/Capture-C/HiCHIP) from biospecimens and implementing protocols for third generation sequencing technologies such as 10X linked read sequencing and nanopore sequencing, under guidance from senior bench scientists in the laboratory. The person will also interact with the bioinformatics group and helping others in the laboratory with related work.
In addition to the duties listed above, the Research Specialist B will be responsible for training and mentoring junior positions. Present data to collaborators at meetings and seminars. The Research Specialist B position will need to work independently.

Position is contingent on continued funding.


Research Specialist A
A Bachelor’s Degree and 0 to 1 year of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience, are required. Experience as a laboratory technician is desirable but not required. Computer skills preferred. Experience with Next Generation Sequencing is desirable.

Research Specialist B
A Bachelor’s Degree and1 to 2 years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience, are required. Experience as a laboratory technician is required. Computer skills preferred. Experience with Next Generation Sequencing is preferred. This position requires organizational skills and the ability to work independently.
