School/Center Overview

The Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania is the oldest and one of the finest medical schools in the United States. Penn is rich in tradition and heritage and at the same time consistently at the forefront of new developments and innovations in medical education and research. Since its founding in 1765 the School has been a strong presence in the community and prides itself on educating the leaders of tomorrow in patient care, biomedical research, and medical education.

The newly created Associate Director (AD) position will manage several fundamental components of the MD-PhD program: admissions and recruitment, student records, select components of grants and fellowship applications, and the annual retreat and special events. The Penn MD-PhD program is one of the largest and mostly highly regarded programs of its kind in the country. The program is run by a dedicated group of faculty leaders, and a full time staff of three, which will be expanded to four with the addition of the AD. The program is thriving, and has grown substantially in size and complexity, necessitating the creation of the new role. There are currently over 190 students in the program enrolled in 11 graduate groups across four Schools of the University. The program typically receives 600+ applications each year, and interviews approximately 120 of those candidates during six two-day interview programs. The AD will report to the Director of Administration of the Combined Degree and Physician Scholar Programs and will work directly with a wide array of faculty leaders and staff across all program areas. The AD will be assisted by the MD-PhD Program Coordinator and will have partial responsibility for his supervision.

A Bachelor’s Degree and 3 years to 5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience are required. One or more years of experience specifically in medical school and/or graduate school administration and admissions is preferred.

The successful candidate will be an independent but highly collaborative professional with a team approach to problem-solving. He or she will need to have the communication, leadership and management skills to work productively with a wide range of faculty and staff members across the Medical School and in 10+ Graduate Programs across the University. Must genuinely enjoy working with others and have a strong service orientation. Also essential is a keen and relentless attention to detail, along with the ability to multi-task efficiently and handle competing demands, while remaining cool under pressure. Must be proficient with word processing, spreadsheet and database software. Ability to work evenings and/or travel is occasionally needed. A valid drivers license and clean driving record is required.

This is a newly created position and it will be important that the inaugural hire is flexible and adaptable and will be enthusiastic about shaping the position over time and taking on new and different responsibilities as needed, in order to best support the overall needs and goals of the program.
