School/Center Overview

The Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania is the oldest and one of the finest medical schools in the United States. Penn is rich in tradition and heritage and at the same time consistently at the forefront of new developments and innovations in medical education and research. Since its founding in 1765 the School has been a strong presence in the community and prides itself on educating the leaders of tomorrow in patient care, biomedical research, and medical education.


The Grants Management Specialist (pre-award) serves as leader for the management of sponsored program pre-award proposal development, review, approval and submission to external sponsors. Includes, information dissemination and training within the School of Medicine at the central level. The Specialist directs and performs research support operations at the central School of Medicine level and on behalf of departments, centers and institutes; performs analyses of research and proposal data; and develops, produces and analyzes reports to enhance the understanding and management of research administration at the School of Medicine. Works to improve customer service to investigators, the efficiency and accuracy of grants management and administration, and to increase the knowledge base for research administration on the School-wide level. Reports to the Director of Pre-Award Management, Office of Research Support Services.


Bachelors degree in accounting, finance or business and five to seven years grant and contract administration / accounting / business administration experience or other relevant experience in research administration process or equivalent combination of education and experience. Thorough knowledge of University, School of Medicine, and major extramural research sponsor policies and guidelines; working knowledge of Uniform Administrative Requirements, Cost Principles, and Audit Requirements for Federal Awards and NIH Grants Policy Statement ; extensive computer skills to support research administration (Web Intelligence/Business Objects experience preferred); Proficient in Excel to produce high level reports for investigators providing them with short term and long term forecasting and modeling; excellent interpersonal and communication skills; demonstrated ability to function as a leader; ability to be flexible and contribute positively to a dynamic business environment.
