School/Center Overview

The Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania is the oldest and one of the finest medical schools in the United States. Penn is rich in tradition and heritage and at the same time consistently at the forefront of new developments and innovations in medical education and research. Since its founding in 1765 the School has been a strong presence in the community and prides itself on educating the leaders of tomorrow in patient care, biomedical research, and medical education.


As a member of the 3-person leadership team, the laboratory manager, working in conjunction with the principal investigator and the laboratory director, will be responsible for ensuring the smooth, efficient functioning of the laboratory, training and mentoring students and staff, and compliance with all University policies pertaining to personnel and environmental safety procedures for chemical, biological, and radiation hazards. Must be a good communicator, able to provide effective technical instruction and guidance adapted to suit researchers with a range of levels of understanding from undergraduate students to post-doctoral fellows. Duties will include processing and resolving all purchasing and service requests; maintaining record systems to track orders, inventory, archiving, and compliance; performing routine maintenance on laboratory equipment; overseeing service contracts and equipment repair; assisting the director in developing and enforcing laboratory operation policies; providing indirect supervision to research staff and student researchers; serving as main contact for other laboratories, departments, and vendors. Knowledge and experience of general laboratory practice, gained either in an academic or an industrial environment, and supervisory or team leadership experience, preferably in a scientific or engineering environment are essential.


A Bachelor’s degree in Biology or a related field and 2-3 years of laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience in a research laboratory, are required. Proficiency with University of Pennsylvania Purchasing System and Compliance networks is highly desirable. (BEN Buys, Cell Center Stockroom, Path & Bio Resources, PSOM Cores, CISPro, and BioRaft etc.) The candidate must possess excellent communication, organizational and computer skills, have the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment and be self-motivated. Knowledge of specialized scientific research equipment and experience in conducting in vivo and/or in vitro based research studies utilizing molecular and cellular techniques would be advantageous. Experience with: Nanodrop spectrometer, Qubit spectrometer, Digital and Conventional Microscopy, Scintillation counter, PCR thermocycler, RT-PCR, digital microscopic photography of IHC/IF based assays, Ultra-Sonicator, Centrifuge, Tissue homogenizer, Digital pipette, Gel electrophoresis, Chemi-Doc Touch, Trans-Blot Transfer system for Western analysis. Understanding of rDNA IBC registration, Bloodborne Pathogen Plan, Bioraft platform, CISPRO, Radiation disposal records/weekly monitoring and quarterly reports, and ALARA.
