School/Center Overview

The Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania is the oldest and one of the finest medical schools in the United States. With training and mentorship from senior lab personnel, the RS-A will perform neurodegenerative disease research in the drug discovery group, utilizing a variety of biochemical and histological methodologies and techniques within the laboratory. In particular, the position will entail the preparation and immunocytochemical staining of brain tissue sections from mouse models of neurodegenerative disease, as well as biochemical analyses of brain preparations by SDS-PAGE/immunoblotting and ELISA methodologies. The position will require working with mice, including husbandry, learning stereotaxic surgical procedures and the post-mortem removal of tissue.

Typical work will include stereotaxic surgery using mouse models of neurodegenerative disease, removal of brain for subsequent evaluation of pathological features as defined by immunohistochemical staining and/or biochemical analyses. The position will also entail the breeding of transgenic mouse models of neurodegenerative disease, with identification of transgenic pups by genotyping using PCR methodologies. The researcher will also interpret study results, troubleshoot technical problems, and present organized study results to the PI and lab staff. Position will be required to keep an electronic notebook, and oversee, organize and prepare lab reagents.

Research Specialist B: In addition to the above, the RS-B candidate will work more independently and actively participate in scientific projects, with the expectation that the candidate will develop novel solutions to research questions in addition to employing the established methods. Moreover, the RS-B candidate will be expected to engage in data analysis and processing, and will analyze results and data for weekly presentations.

Position is contingent on continued funding.


Research Specialist A: BA/BS in Biology/Neuroscience or related field with 0-1 or more years of work experience. Ability to work in a team environment. Computer literacy in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point. Multi-tasking is important and other duties include keeping an organized, up-to-date electronic laboratory notebook. The successful candidate will be expected to attend and present at laboratory meetings and activities of the Center.

Research Specialist B: Same as above with 1 to 2 years of working experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. 3 or more years of experience preferred.
