School/Center Overview

The World’s First Business School

In 1881, American entrepreneur and industrialist Joseph Wharton established the world’s first collegiate school of business at the University of Pennsylvania.

Wharton’s pioneering vision was to produce graduates who would become ‘pillars of the state, whether in private or in public life.’ The Wharton School maintains a long tradition of educating visionary business leaders in academia, business, government, and not-for-profit organizations.

Today, Wharton has expanded the scope of this vision to become the most comprehensive source of business knowledge in the world – with over 225 faculty members, 95,000 alumni, 5,000 students across 10 academic departments, 20 research centers, and more than 9,000 executive education participants annually.

The Penn Wharton Public Policy Initiative informs policy discussions in Washington, DC by supporting the production of data-driven, non-normative research on issues at the intersection of business and public policy. To this end, the Initiative is seeking a Research Associate/Data Analyst to assist with faculty research on a number of public policy topics, including housing finance, tax reform, health care and entitlements reform, and the federal budget. Job responsibilities include collecting and maintaining databases, performing statistical and econometric analyses, writing research reports, and providing research-related technical programming support. A thorough understanding of economics, ability to use statistical and programming tools, and self-motivation are highly valued in performing these functions

Please note that this is a two-year position, contingent upon funding. PPI s Research Associate program is modeled on similar programs at the Federal Reserve and NBER, but with a stronger focus on empirical research related to public policy, and we anticipate that the successful candidate, after two years with PPI, will seek to go on to graduate programs in economics or related disciplines.

A bachelor s degree, preferably in Economics, Statistics, Finance, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related discipline; and a minimum of 2 years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience, are required. In addition, the following credentials are important:

-At least 1 year of previous experience serving as a research assistant/data analyst or pursing independent research as an undergraduate. Proficiency with programming languages, such as Python, Matlab, Stata, and R.
-Ability to pull data from existing sources, such as Bloomberg.
-Demonstrated interest in public policy and aptitude for graduate-level research.
