The World’s First Business School

In 1881, American entrepreneur and industrialist Joseph Wharton established the world’s first collegiate school of business at the University of Pennsylvania.

Wharton’s pioneering vision was to produce graduates who would become ‘pillars of the state, whether in private or in public life.’ The Wharton School maintains a long tradition of educating visionary business leaders in academia, business, government, and not-for-profit organizations.

Today, Wharton has expanded the scope of this vision to become the most comprehensive source of business knowledge in the world – with over 225 faculty members, 95,000 alumni, 5,000 students across 10 academic departments, 20 research centers, and more than 9,000 executive education participants annually.


Reporting to the Associate Director of Research and Prospect Management, the Prospect Researcher serves as a member of the Wharton External Affairs Research and Prospect Management team, which provides in-depth research services and prospect management to staff in support of Wharton External Affairs’ fundraising and alumni relations goals. Manages a significant workload of research projects primarily concerned with proactive prospect identification and screening, on both Wharton alumni and other Wharton donor prospects, both international and domestic. Works with Director and Associate Director to create proactive research projects in support of key Wharton initiatives. Assists in preparation of background documents for Wharton Board meetings and events. Other duties as assigned.

* Reporting to the Associate Director of Research and Prospect Management, create and update wealth assessment documents, research profiles, meeting briefings, and event briefings for senior leadership and development staff at Wharton External Affairs
* Assess the giving ability of prospective donors using established guidelines to increase the University’s prospect pool
* Work with research team to manage work flow and address challenges in a timely, competent manner
* Develop an understanding of the standards and ethics of prospect research through educational opportunities and conferences
* Perform other duties as assigned


BA/BS in field relevant to research activities of department or equivalent work experience. At least 1 to 3 years’ experience in prospect research required, preferably in higher education or business setting. Experience with proactive research and prospect identification preferred. Ability to gather, analyze, and write detailed reports in a high-volume department required. Ability to work on multiple projects while meeting tight deadlines essential. Ability to work effectively with large, diverse group of development officers to achieve department and fundraising goals essential. Knowledge of computer databases and Internet resources used for prospect research required. Excellent verbal and written communication skills required. Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access required. Capacity to work as a team member is essential.
