Penn Engineering is expanding its online presence and looking for an experienced Instructional Designer with considerable project management skills to lead the design, production and refinement of Penn Engineering online courses and programs. Reporting to the Director, Online Learning and Analytics, the Instructional Designer would serve as an expert in online education , technology, pedagogy, and evidence-based teaching and learning strategies. The Instructional Designer will work closely with faculty and the Online Learning team to develop innovative and engaging for-credit, non-credit, and blended online programs and courses. Working both independently and collaborating with the Penn online learning community and external vendors, this position has direct responsibility for ensuring the quality of online courses. Additional responsibilities include ensuring courses meet accessibility standards, providing guidance to faculty on copyright policies, and making sure projects are completed on time and within budget.

Serving as a resource for faculty, the Instructional Designer will also provide guidance on how to develop blended on-campus offerings, recommend online learning tools that can be used in their courses to enhance the learning experience, connect faculty with the resources they need to be successful, and design meaningful online and digital learning experiences that meet students’ needs.

The Instructional Designer position is a 1-year term position.


A Bachelor’s Degree and 3 years to 5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and online, blended or flipped classroom instructional design experience is required. Degree in computer science or engineering and formal training in education, instructional design, learning theory, and/or assessment design preferred.

The ideal candidate will have excellent project management skills, significant experience in working with faculty to design and develop online courses, a background in engineering or computer science education, a demonstrated record of innovation in the online learning space, and a passion for making positive impacts on learners worldwide through online education.
