School/Center Overview

The School of Arts and Sciences forms the foundation of the scholarly excellence that has established Penn as one of the world’s leading research universities. We teach students across all 12 Penn schools, and our academic departments span the reach from anthropology and biology to sociology and South Asian studies.


The primary responsibility of this position is to provide technical direction for the Theatre Arts Program’s productions, class projects, and other special events, and to regularly create, execute, and deliver design in area(s) of expertise (scenery, lights, sound, props, etc.). Theatre Arts is a small program within a large research institution, offering a major and minor, and reaching students from many disciplines who study theatre as part of a liberal arts education. Penn’s Theatre Arts Program season typically includes three mainstage productions, along with workshops, readings, residencies, and other special events. The person in this position will oversee the scheduling, supervision, and training of several work-study students and other student production crews; participate in the budgeting for and purchasing of production elements; maintain equipment, inventories, as well as rehearsal and performance spaces; create technical drawings; supervise construction, load-in, tech rehearsals, as well as all productions and special events. The Technical Director/Designer will maintain a high level of support for the artistic production and academic goals of the program, including mentoring students, and providing an educationally sound, safe, and satisfying experience for all Theatre Arts participants. This is a 9 month Limited Service position.


A Bachelor’s Degree and 2 years to 3 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Required skills include: all aspects of technical direction, carpentry, stage electrics, and rigging, as well as the desire and ability to teach, supervise, and inspire students to learn all aspects of theatre craft. The schedule has some flexibility, but the Technical Director will work nights and weekends around productions, and should be a visible and regularly present member of the team. The ideal candidate not only will be good-humored and an excellent collaborator and colleague, but also a self-starter able to work independently, possessing a strong work ethic, and an unfailing commitment to getting the job done.
