School/Center Overview

The University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology was founded in 1887, and is one of the world’s great archaeology and anthropology research museums. It is the largest university museum in the United States, with roughly one million objects in our care. The Penn Museum encapsulates and illustrates the human story: who we are and where we came from. As a dynamic research institution with many ongoing research projects, the Museum is a vibrant and engaging place of continual discovery, with the mandate of research, teaching, collections stewardship, and public engagement.


The Tikal Digitization Coordinator has a dual report to the Head of Collections of the Penn Museum and the Curator of Special Collections in the Kislak Center for Special Collections, Rare Books and Manuscripts. This position coordinates the digitization program for the Penn Museum’s Tikal Archives. Working closely with both Museum and Library colleagues, the Digitization Coordinator identifies, catalogs, and prepares analog archival materials to be sent to the Penn Libraries Schoenberg Center for Electronic Text & Image (SCETI) or outside vendors (e.g. the Athaneum) for digitization. In addition, this position manages archival workflows for both extracting and reinserting materials in the Tikal Archives, handles to any follow-up requests for attendant materials that will help flesh out the Tikal Digital Archive Model that is under development, and responds to special requests related to accessing materials housed in the Tikal Archives. This is a one-year, term funded position with renewal subject to project needs and funding availability.


A Bachelor’s Degree required, MLS degree with Archives specialization preferred with one to two years of progressively responsible archival experience. Demonstrated knowledge of archival principles, concepts, techniques, and procedures. Working knowledge of metadata standards, imaging, and digital asset management. Experience using object/relational database. Proficiency with scanners and scanning software, as well as the Adobe Design Suite (specifically Photoshop, Acrobat, and Bridge). Cataloging experience using DACS, AACR2, national authority files, and MARC. A public service orientation (courtesy, flexibility, patience, dependability, sound judgment, discretion), excellent communications skills (both oral and written), and strong analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills expected. Ability to lift 40 pounds. Computer programming experience desirable. Background in anthropology or archaeology desirable.
