School/Center Overview

The Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania is the oldest and one of the finest medical schools in the United States. Penn is rich in tradition and heritage and at the same time consistently at the forefront of new developments and innovations in medical education and research. Since its founding in 1765 the School has been a strong presence in the community and prides itself on educating the leaders of tomorrow in patient care, biomedical research, and medical education.


Assume full responsibility for the tracking, processing and shipping of research blood and other biological samples acquired from patients participating in studies coordinated by the Abramson Cancer Center Clinical Research Unit Staff. Coordinate day to day aspects related to receiving, storage and shipping of research specimens, including tracking of receipt and storage of specimens, and scheduling of shipments. Serves as a resource for the study teams for lab processing issues/concerns, assist research teams by answsering sponsor generated laboratory related queries. Maintain collaborative relationships with outside laboratory and medical staff, such as surgery, CTRC and TTAB. Assist in training research assistants assigned to the biospecimen team. Maintain overall organization of laboratory, supplies and study related protocols; maintain supply and lab kit inventory necessary to process the protocol related labwork. Assists with the review and update of protocols to ensure lab capabilities are consistent with protocol requirements and that processing will be compliant with protocol requirements. Provides backup staffing and coverage as needed, and assists with logistical lab questions. Draw blood samples, perform EKGs, and collect vital signs on research participants as needed. Provides other lab-related support as needed.

Position is contingent on continued funding.


HS diploma or GED and 5 years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, are required. Certified Medical Assistant with at least 1-2 years experience in a healthcare setting strongly preferred. Clinical research experience and/or experience working as a laboratory technician are highly desirable. Must have effective communication skill as well as strong organizational skills. Flexible scheduling may be required.
