The World’s First Business School

In 1881, American entrepreneur and industrialist Joseph Wharton established the world’s first collegiate school of business at the University of Pennsylvania.

The Senior Development and Operations Software Engineer will be responsible for overseeing the development, monitoring, maintenance and ongoing operation of the digital platform for the Behavior Change for Good Initiative, led by Professors Katherine Milkman and Angela Duckworth. The Senior Engineer will be responsible for the build, architecture, and scaling of the digital platform. The Senior Engineer will be the technical manager and liaison for the Behavior Change for Good platform and work closely with the Research and Development teams. The Senior Engineer will ensure adherence to technical, quality assurance, data integrity, and security standards. The Senior Engineer will be responsible for project management, client communications, technical writing and applying best practices in various software development methodologies. This position requires a devotion to teamwork, an eagerness to learn about different domains, and a passion for software development.


* B.A./B.S. in Computer Science (or a related field)
* Have at least 7+ years of experience working with a web framework, or equivalent combination of education and experience
* Have at least 3 + years experience in a DevOps environment
* Experience with systems architecture and solid knowledge of DevOps
* Deep knowledge of Python, SQL, various forms of JavaScript (front-end frameworks, libraries, APIs), database optimization, and HTML5/CSS3 for web development
* Proven experience with and knowledge of Amazon Web Services (AWS) at scale
* Proven experience with modern MVC programming frameworks, version control, automated testing
* Solid knowledge of NodeJS, Mongo, Angular, React
* Solid knowledge of relational databases, NoSQL data stores, database design and querying
* Have dealt with a large scale, including architecting such systems in a cloud environment
* Have expertise in troubleshooting and tuning systems
* Have experience of system failures and managing large volumes of experimental data
* Have demonstrated experience in needs assessment
* Experience in Agile/Scrum methodologies
* Creative problem solving skills and strong analytical skills required
* Be self-starting, pro-active and organized, as well as being capable of long-term thinking
* Demonstrated ability to continually learn new skills both technical and non-technical
* Demonstrated ability to multi-task and work effectively within tight turnaround schedules
* Excellent verbal, written and technical communication skills and interpersonal skills
* Technical management experience managing and leading cross-functional development teams consisting of five or more

* Master’s degree or PhD in Computer Science (or related field)
* Extensive engineering experience in fast-growing, consumer-facing, data-driven startups
* Experience managing clusters of databases (specifically Postgres)
* Experience in Nginx, Apache, and Linux/Unix
* Experience in full-stack development
* Experience in systems administration
* An enjoyment of automation and have experience with configuration and app deployment via Ansbile, Chef, Puppet or similar platforms
* A deep understanding of low-level network programming
* Strong background in DB cluster management
* Previous experience with or knowledge of academic research (as it relates to technical needs)
