The Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania is the oldest and one of the finest medical schools in the United States. This position will support all environmental monitoring (EM) sampling efforts for the EM program within the Clinical Cell and Vaccine Production Facility (CVPF) at the University of Pennsylvania. This position reports to the QC Functional Lead with primary responsibilities that include demonstrating proficiency to perform EM sampling including but not limited to: cross-training in facilities-related activities as necessary, conducting non-viable particulate sampling within CVPF facilities, conducting viable surface and air particulate samples, assisting with data entry and trending, and providing support for EM-related or microbiology initiatives as assigned and/or as necessary. Use of sterile technique and universal precautions as well as capabilities to lift up to 20 lbs, perform aseptic manipulations using standard EM equipment, and gown aseptically into ISO-classified environments is required. Additional responsibilities include potentially working irregular or overtime hours to support CVPF manufacturing activities and/or validation efforts, supporting EM-related SOP development, and potentially conducting plate incubation and enumeration when necessary. Additional responsibilities may apply. Routine interaction with manufacturing technicians, quality control scientists, quality assurance personnel, and additional support staff is necessary.


High school diploma and 2 years of experience, or an equivalent combination of experience and education, in aseptic processing and/or environmental monitoring are required. Experience in a highly regulated manufacturing environment is required. Previous experience working within ISO-classified environments is required. Direct experience collecting environmental monitoring samples is strongly preferred. Working knowledge of the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT) standards highly preferred. Experience with gowning into aseptic cleanroom environments and working according to good laboratory practices (GLP) and good tissue practices (GTP) is strongly desired. Ability to be cross-trained to perform plate incubation, enumeration, and changeover cleaning when not performing EM sampling is desired. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required. Previous demonstrated experience working with clinical trials preferred. Knowledge of medical terminology and critical thinking skills to ensure that the data are accurate, logical, and consistent with institutional and regulatory reporting requirements are required. Efficient time management and ability to multitask at a given time are essential. Excellent organizational record keeping skills are necessary. Flexibility to work weekends, overtime, and irregular hours is required. Position is contingent upon funding.
