The Office of the Provost provides direction on all facets of the University’s academic mission, including education, faculty, research, online learning, global initiatives, admissions, athletics, student life, and arts and culture. The Provost’s Center aggregates programs and offices designed to support University operations, including: the Office of the Provost, the Office of the Vice Provost for Research and its reporting departments (Penn Center for Innovation, Environmental Health and Radiation Safety, University Laboratory Animal Resources, and Regulatory Affairs), the Office of the Chaplain, the Graduate Student Center and Family Resource Center, the Division of Recreation and Intercollegiate Athletics, College Houses and Academic Services, New Student Orientation, the Office of Student Conduct, the Center for Undergraduate Research and Fellowships, the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, the University of Pennsylvania Press, and all of the University’s arts organizations (Penn Museum, Institute of Contemporary Art, Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, Arthur Ross Gallery, and University Art Collection). Penn’s Office of the Provost is seeking an experienced data analyst who can lead strategic financial analyses that support planning across a broad range of University academic and administrative areas. The Senior Data Analyst will develop and communicate financial analytical insights that inform decision-making among senior University leaders. This position is ideal for someone who possesses exceptional analytical abilities and is interested in contributing to the mission of Penn and gaining a deep understanding of the University in the process.

The Senior Data Analyst, reporting to the Associate Provost for Finance and Planning, is responsible for developing complex and high quality data analyses, models, and presentations in support of financial planning and decision-making. To accomplish this, the Senior Data analyst will effectively translate strategic business questions and hypotheses into comprehensive analyses, identifying key variables, relevant data sources, and using the appropriate methodologies and tools to conduct the work. This requires a high level of problem solving and collaboration with other offices to develop the analysis, coupled with the necessary skills to execute the work.

The Senior Data Analyst will be able to understand, interpret, and synthesize a wide variety of internal and external data, with a primary focus on working with financial data. The incumbent will utilize structured and unstructured data and perform analysis to surface insights using basic analytical methods. This includes cleaning and transforming the data, creating new derived data attributes when needed, documenting and communicating key assumptions and caveats, and employing sound recommendations for handling missing data points or outliers.

The Senior Data Analyst will translate analyses into impactful presentations, dashboards, and reports that identify and communicate new insights to inform decision-making. The incumbent will support senior leaders to effectively communicate the data to others.


A Bachelor’s Degree and 5 years to 7 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Graduate degree in Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Finance, or Business preferred.
Understands and interprets business needs and translating needs into data requirements.
Strong analytical skills coupled with the ability to form hypotheses and draw meaningful insights from disparate data sources.
Proficiency in basic statistical techniques, cluster and segmentation analysis, time series analysis, regression/logistic regression analysis.
Strong working knowledge of analytical and reporting tools such as Excel, Access, Tableau, and statistical packages.
Advanced data visualization skills, understanding of data modeling and query writing.
Project management experience required.
Solid organizational skills; ability to work across multiple functions.
Superior testing and quality control skills.
