School/Center Overview

The Office of the Provost provides direction on all facets of the University’s academic mission, including education, faculty, research, online learning, global initiatives, admissions, athletics, student life, and arts and culture. The Provost’s Center aggregates programs and offices designed to support University operations, including: the Office of the Provost, the Office of the Vice Provost for Research and its reporting departments (Penn Center for Innovation, Environmental Health and Radiation Safety, University Laboratory Animal Resources, and Regulatory Affairs), the Office of the Chaplain, the Graduate Student Center and Family Resource Center, the Division of Recreation and Intercollegiate Athletics, College Houses and Academic Services, New Student Orientation, the Office of Student Conduct, the Center for Undergraduate Research and Fellowships, the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, the University of Pennsylvania Press, and all of the University’s arts organizations (Penn Museum, Institute of Contemporary Art, Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, Arthur Ross Gallery, and University Art Collection). It also includes interdisciplinary academic centers and institutes that are more appropriately housed centrally than in an individual school, including the Laboratory for Research on the Structure of Matter, the Center for Cognitive Neuroscience, the Center for Neuroscience and Society, the Penn Institute for Urban Research, the Center for Teaching and Learning, Kelly Writers House, and Weiss Tech House.


The Senior Associate Director/Associate Director will lead all operations related to the UPstart company incubation program as the Director of the UPstart program while directly managing the portfolio of companies focused on therapeutic applications. The successful candidate will mentor portfolio managers within PCI Ventures (PCIV) and support their efforts to develop start-up companies based on University of Pennsylvania research and innovation programs. The position further calls for serving as point person on external communications and programs interfacing with the PCIV portfolio and other PCI technologies such as the Science Center’s QED program, the Detkin IP clinic, investors, and others. The Senior Associate Director/Associate Director will work towards marketing of the portfolio companies, of Penn entrepreneurial approach and of Penn with internal and external parties. The successful candidate will also support the managers of the Pennovation Center in creating a vibrant innovation community at the Center. The successful candidate will maintain an active network within the local entrepreneurship, investment and life sciences communities through attendance of conferences, after-hour events, committees, and other off site activities as needed. The Senior Associate Director/Associate Director will report to the Director of PCIV but will have to interface effectively and efficiently with staff across the entire PCI structure including all satellite offices and all functions. In addition, the Senior Associate Director/Associate Director will have to interface effectively and efficiently with various structures across different departments and functions at the University.


A masters degree required plus a minimum of 5 years experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required, Ph.D. preferred. Experience in the establishment and management of startup companies especially ones emanating from university research; experience with operational issues surrounding startup companies such as company formation, legal requirements, governance, fundraising and recruitment of teams; also experience with business planning and market research is preferred. Strong technical background in the life sciences, and prior experience working with technologies in the device/diagnostic space as well as therapeutics across small molecule and biological assets. Understanding of the regulatory context for bringing such products to market. Experience working with others in implementing consistent processes, documentation and positioning that unifies the perception and management of a portfolio. Strong understanding of intellectual property with the ability to create protection strategies for life sciences and other assets including patent filings and trademark. Strong personal communication skills including ability to present in front of technical and investor audiences. Ability to communicate effectively with researchers and physicians at a major research medical center. Understanding of academic institution structures and drivers.
Preferred: understanding of the IRB process and clinical study coordination and preclinical development programs.

Appropriate title will be determined by candidate’s years of experience.
