The Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania is the oldest and one of the finest medical schools in the United States. The Biospecimen Processing Laboratory (BPL) of the Abramson Cancer Center (ACC) Clinical Research Unit (CRU) is a centralized laboratory that processes and stores blood, plasma, tissue and other biological specimens obtained from subjects enrolled to oncology clinical trials at the University of Pennsylvania (‘Penn’). Analysis of biospecimens is essential to the scientific mission of the CRU, which provides support to roughly one-half of oncology clinical and translational research at Penn. The Biospecimen Processing Lab Manager is responsible for maintaining the laboratory’s function by managing Biospecimen Coordinators, developing and regularly updating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), maintaining laboratory equipment and supplies, and facilitating communications with research staff and clinical teams (e.g. laboratory, infusion, CHPs, or inpatient staff). This position actively works alongside the Biospecimen Coordinators by processing and shipping samples according to protocol and as directed by workflow needs. The successful candidate will comply with all policies relating to UPHS, GLP, OSHA, and other laboratory standards.

Specific responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
* Oversee functions of the Biospecimen Processing Laboratory (BPL) which includes: supervision of laboratory staff, facilitating communication between staff and research/clinical teams, ensuring seamless daily operations by trouble-shooting issues as they arise, and assisting with any and all aspects of the laboratory to maintain efficiency during staff absences or when a specific team member’s workload exceeds capacity. Provide essential emergency off-hours coverage as the first point-of-contact in the event of any threat to specimen integrity such as a freezer malfunction.
* Work collaboratively with disease-site teams to appropriately resource incoming protocols by pre-reviewing laboratory manuals and resolving logistical issues ahead of study activation. Actively participate in Site Initiation Visits (SIVs) and provide training to Biospecimen Coordinators per protocol and according to their delegation. Provide documentation of training to the study teams for the Investigator Site File (ISF). Provide additional training or re-training as policies are updated over time, study-related processing requirements change, or according to any identified gaps in knowledge.
* Collaborate with CRU administration, disease-site leadership, and Biospecimen Coordinators to develop best practices with the goal of seamless and efficient flow of biological specimens from collection through storage and/or shipment. Track, analyze and report to senior leadership unit-wide issues and potential corrective action plans. In this role, he/she will facilitate ongoing improvement of laboratory and the evolution of its capabilities as the needs of clinical trials change.
* Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with outside laboratories and clinical staff, such as the Department of Surgery, the Center for Human Phenomic Sciences (CHPS), and Department of Pathology’s Tumor Tissue and Biospecimen Bank. Serve as an integrating hub by overseeing coordination of biological samples (i.e. PK, PD, PMN and PBMC samples) whose chain-of-custody includes several centers (internal or external).
* Develop and regularly update laboratory SOPs and Best Practices to maximize lab efficiency, safety, protocol compliance, and adherence to local, state and federal standards/regulations (i.e. UPHS, GLP and OSHA). Maintain Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), ensure visibility of safety information and chemical hygiene plans within the laboratory, manage and archive important documents (i.e. training documentation, equipment purchasing and maintenance records, shipment logs, laboratory journals, chain-of-custody forms, etc.), and oversee chemical inventories.
* Take responsibility for laboratory equipment by ensuring proper purchasing, calibration, maintenance, and regular inspections. Maintain requisite documentation as required and make available to Sponsors upon request. Propose new or additional resources that would enhance the laboratory and its function.
* Implement and continually support an Inventory Control System to maximize utilization of laboratory space and allow for real-time assessment of study-specific inventory. Coordinate removal, disposal, or repurposing of expired or overflow laboratory kits and materials.
* Hold preliminary meetings with new CRU staff (i.e. Coordinators, Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Investigators, etc.) which will include a tour of facilities and a description of available resources. Conduct weekly or every-other-week meetings with BPL team members to review any issues needing to be addressed. Attend CRU project manager meetings as a representative of the BPL and assist in the development of new initiatives. Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops and reviewing state-of-the-art practices; ensure that colleagues are updated on all relevant issues
* In collaboration with CRU leadership, maintain staff by recruiting and interviewing full-time, part-time and temporary-extra laboratory staff. Provide training that is tailored to the needs of the individual and his/her role within the laboratory. Maintain an instructional plan for all new hires, which includes training documentation as well as the establishment of performance or competency standards to ensure understanding of skills with the goal of maximizing the efficiency and quality of research performed within the program.

BS degree in relevant scientific field with at least 3-5 years of experience in a healthcare setting, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, are required. An advanced degree is a plus. Prior supervisory or lab management experience is strongly preferred. Experience establishing laboratory standard operating procedures is preferred. Clinical research experience and/or experience working as a laboratory technician or in a lab setting is highly desirable. Must have effective communication skills as well as strong organizational skills. Flexible scheduling will be required in this role.
