The Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania is the oldest and one of the finest medical schools in the United States. Since its founding in 1765 the School has been a strong presence in the community and prides itself on educating the leaders of tomorrow in patient care, biomedical research, and medical education.


The Instructional Designer in the Department of Medical Ethics and Health Policy leads the development, delivery, evaluation, and maintenance of multiple high-quality courses simultaneously. The position focuses on attaining effective educational outcomes across Online Educational Initiatives’ (OEI) programs, including the Master of Health Care Innovation (first-of-its-kind at Penn), professional development, and continuing education tracks.

The Instructional Designer plays a critical role by providing expertise in pedagogy, project management, and multimedia design to contribute to the OEI’s goal of creating online learning experiences that enhance careers to transform health care delivery. Reporting to the Director of Online Educational Initiatives, the new position joins a team that includes numerous faculty, one current Instructional Designer, a Graphic Design Specialist, TAs, and University of Pennsylvania video production specialists.

Specific responsibilities include working with individual faculty members as the lead in developing effective strategies in online pedagogy, including 1) translating subject matter expertise into online education through multimedia content, learner and instructor interactions, and assessments; 2) designing meaningful learning objectives that evaluate comprehension, analysis, synthesis, and application of knowledge; and 3) creating appropriately rigorous learning resources, activities, and assessments. The Instructional Designer leads a multimedia production team through planning, recording, and post-production of multiple courses simultaneously.
The designer ensures that course content follows evidence-based best practices for online education, meets accessibility requirements, and reflects high standards for consistency and quality. The Instructional Designer may also create some course materials. The Instructional Designer guides a team of TAs who engage with faculty and learners to support course objectives. In addition to drawing on existing evidence-based best practices, the ID will play a significant role in contributing to new research on innovations in online education.

  • The minimum of a Bachelor’s degree and three years of progressively responsible experience in online course design and development within higher education and/or a health care setting, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, are required. Master’s degree or professional development certificate preferred. Teaching experience preferred. Background in a health-related field preferred.
    * Demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate with instructors and course development teams to create solutions that meet learning objectives and retain professional development and graduate student learners.
    * Strong project management skills for creative, team-oriented productions. Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a service-oriented, supportive environment, as well as manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
    * Strong skills in multimedia design, communication, and proofreading. Experience with digital video production for Web and working knowledge of HTML/CSS preferred.
    * Knowledge of evidence-based best practices in online education, with a commitment to continuous learning and contribution to the field.
    * Substantial working knowledge of educational technology tools for interaction, project-based learning, and assessment within a learning management system. One or more years of experience working within Instructure Canvas LMS preferred.
