Duties

Reporting to the Senior Director of Development for Biomedical Research, the Associate Director of Development for Biomedical Research will contribute to the major gift and alumni relations program to support Penn Medicine’s world class biomedical research enterprise. The goal of Penn Medicine’s research program is to understand the fundamental mechanisms of disease and to translate this knowledge into medical therapies that will improve the lives of patients and families around the world. The Associate Director of Development for Biomedical Research will play an important role bringing together leading faculty and donors to accelerate progress in biomedical research.

The Associate Director of Development for Biomedical Research will increase PMDAR’s capacity to raise support for research including the Basic Science Departments, Biomedical Graduate Studies Program, and Basic and Translational Centers and Institutes. Contribute meaningfully to a division-wide program to raise visibility, resources, and engagement to better position Penn Medicine to achieve ambitious campaign goals for research. Help to build a comprehensive development program for research including annual fund support, corporate and foundation support, and identifying and cultivating prospects who are outside Penn Medicine’s traditional prospect pool.

Cultivate partnerships with gift officers in Penn Medicine and throughout the University whose prospects have interests in biomedical research. Identify and cultivate individual and foundation prospects. Create vision pieces for fundraising purposes translating the Penn Medicine leadership’s research priorities and major themes relating to basic and translational research.

Specific Duties:

Basic and Translational Science Development

Provide development staff support to Basic Science Department Chairs and Center and Institute Directors.

Work with the Senior Director of Development for Biomedical Research and academic leadership, including Department Chairs and Center and Institute Directors, to identify fundraising priorities and prospects that align with strategic priorities.

Under the guidance of the Senior Director of Development for Biomedical Research, help to build a development program for research including annual fund support, corporate and foundation support, forming volunteer leadership councils, and identifying and cultivating prospects who are outside Penn Medicine’s traditional prospect pool.

Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward individual and foundation prospects including international prospects with a goal of building the major gifts ($250K+) pipeline to support biomedical research at Penn Medicine.

Plan, coordinate, and direct visits and special events for prospects and donors.

Increase PMDAR’s Capacity to Raise Support for Research


Working collaboratively with a range of stakeholders, increase PMDAR’s capacity to raise support for research including the Basic Science Departments, Biomedical Graduate Studies Program, and Basic and Translational Centers and Institutes.

Forge partnerships with gift officers in Penn Medicine and throughout the University to identify and cultivate prospects with interests in research who might not otherwise be aware of the transformative possibilities of Penn Medicine.

On behalf of PMDAR, build bridges to the research faculty to encourage partnership in identifying previously unrecognized prospects among their social and professional networks.

Assist in planning and executing faculty philanthropy training programs.

Collaborate with the Alumni Development and Relations team to enhance Biomedical Graduate Studies alumni engagement and major gift fundraising.

Collaborate with Penn Medicine’s Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations in exploring opportunities with corporate and foundation prospects.

Elevate PMDAR’s Visibility with Target Audiences

Elevate the visibility of basic and translation research at the School, including increasing and directing faculty engagement and developing effective communications vehicles.

Contribute to vision pieces for fundraising purposes and for use by trustees and volunteers that convey the Dean’s research priorities and major themes relating to basic and translational research.

Prospect Development and solicitation

Personally maintain and staff a portfolio of individual and foundation giving prospects whose interests relate to basic science research including graduate alumni. In addition, serve as temporary development officer for programs in transition or with no major gift officer assignment.

Meets assigned fiscal year performance management metrics established in partnership with the Senior Director and in consultation with the Chief Executive Director, Leadership and Strategic Initiatives.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

BA/BS; at least 3 – 5 years of progressively responsible experience in higher education including an understanding of research enterprise, development, volunteer management, alumni relations and communications methods and techniques; or relevant education and experience. Demonstrated experience in dealing with faculty, administrators, physicians, and other constituent groups. Highly collaborative. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Event planning and project management experience a plus. Highly proficient in the use of Word, Excel, Power Point, Adobe Acrobat, publishing and database software. Ability to travel both locally and nationally. Valid driver’s license required.
