Duties

The Center for Neurodegenerative Disease Research (CNDR) within the department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania is seeking a research specialist with prior experience in the characterization of small molecules utilizing LC-MS/MS methodologies. The position requires an individual capable of scientific independence who can develop, troubleshoot and implement LC-MS/MS techniques for the measurement of compounds and drug metabolites from in vitro and in vivo studies. Applicants should have had prior exposure to the characterization of drug pharmacokinetics. The candidate will be expected to plan, conduct and interpret bioanalytical and related LC-MS/MS studies, including but not limited to experiments focused on the measurement of compound levels from various tissues. In addition to an appropriate level of scientific expertise, the preferred candidate must also be adept with data analysis, including the use of standard graphing and statistical software. The researcher must be able to interpret study results, troubleshoot technical problems, and present organized study results to the PI and lab staff. The position will require regular and detailed entries into an electronic notebook, presentation of findings to PI and lab staff and the organization and preparation of lab reagents.
Research Specialist C: In addition to the above, the RS-C candidate will work with a significantly higher level of independence with less oversight. S/he will act in a lead capacity and will be responsible for training and indirectly supervising other CNDR personnel. The RS-C will be expected to design as well as troubleshoot and implement LC-MS/MS techniques. Duties of the RS-C position differ from the RS-B position in that the RS-C will make greater contributions the field with the expectation that the candidate will develop novel solutions to research questions.

Qualifications

Research Specialist B: The preferred candidate will possess a B.S. in the biological sciences or chemistry with at least 1 to 3 years of experience in either the pharmaceutical or academic sector in which a primary research activity was the development and utilization of LC-MS/MS methodologies or have an equivalent combination of education and experience. Master’s degree is a plus.
Research Specialist C: The preferred candidate will possess a B.S. in the biological sciences or chemistry with at least 3 to 5 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Master’s degree is a plus. In addition, the RS-C candidate must have proven expertise in management of research projects and design of experiments. S/he must be able to analyze and interpret data independently. Moreover, it is expected that the RS-C candidate will have a higher degree of technical expertise.
