School/Center Overview

The Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania is the oldest and one of the finest medical schools in the United States. Penn is rich in tradition and heritage and at the same time consistently at the forefront of new developments and innovations in medical education and research. Since its founding in 1765 the School has been a strong presence in the community and prides itself on educating the leaders of tomorrow in patient care, biomedical research, and medical education.


The Research Specialist B will investigate the role of specific tumor virus genes and gene products in the development of human cancers. They will also screen for microbial agents in human cancers and other diseases. Molecular biology techniques, biochemical assays and cell biological approaches will be pursued. Implement and perform assays on microarray and deep sequencing platforms. This individual will develop familiarity with outputs from several molecular assays, and combine these data sets with phenotypic data such as clinical outcomes. They will be involved in ordering supplies, maintenance of equipment and other basic resources utilized by lab personnel, and working with post-doctoral fellows and other trainees in executing experiments for ongoing projects. Technology development and troubleshooting will be expected as well as independently planning experiments with minimal oversight.

In addition to the above responsibilities, the Research Specialist C will collaborate with the Principal Investigator to conduct and analyze complex experiments involving molecular and cell biology, immunochemistry, and DNA & RNA analysis. This individual will work independently to manage daily research projects, data collection, and organization of the laboratory. He/she must be able to identify and resolve technical issues, and use analytical and decision making skills to implement assigned projects. He/she will evaluate results, maintain clone laboratory stocks, and be responsible for laboratory maintenance.
Position is contingent on continued funding.


Both levels of this position require effective problem solving abilities; communication and writing skills are critical. Must possess the ability to work as part of a team, as well as independently.
Research Specialist B: The minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree and 1 to 3 years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience, are required.
Research Specialist C: The minimum of a Bachelor’s degree and 3 to 5 years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience, are required.
