School/Center Overview

The Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania is the oldest and one of the finest medical schools in the United States. Since its founding in 1765 the School has been a strong presence in the community and prides itself on educating the leaders of tomorrow in patient care, biomedical research, and medical education.


Research Specialist A: Under the supervision of the PI, the research specialist is expected to help carry out the daily activities of the laboratory as well perform a wide range of experimental techniques involving routine molecular biology such as cloning, PCR, RT-PCR etc, tissue histology, imaging of stained tissues and, depending on interest, skill level and experience, basic mouse crosses as part of guided involvement in an ongoing lab project.

The Research Specialist B will undertake the duties outlined for the Research Specialist A position, with the additional expectation that the candidate will work more independently and participate in developing novel solutions to research efforts. The candidate is expected to have greater laboratory research and mouse work experience that the Research Specialist A. Depending on performance, skill level and interest, the Research Specialist B may be asked to also undertake an independent research project.

Position is contingent on continued funding.


Research Specialist A: Bachelor’s Degree and 0 to 1 year of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience, are required.
Research Specialist B: Bachelor’s Degree and 1 to 3 years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, are required.

Both: At least one year of experience in a research or related setting required.
Sound independent judgment and competence in research methodologies.
Previous laboratory experience in molecular biology is required.
Experience with histology, genetics, and mouse husbandry is preferred.
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail are essential.
Ability to multi-task, think critically, follow procedures and guidance and working to develop independence.
Good interpersonal, communication and problem solving skills. Demonstrates the ability to work in a collaborative, team-oriented environment, and can clearly present their work.
Two year commitment is strongly preferred.
