Duties

The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania seeks an experienced, innovative and solution-focused Senior Director of Major and Planned Gifts (herein Senior Director) to provide strategic direction, inspirational leadership and oversight of a comprehensive major gifts program of fundraising and alumni activities designed to increase maximum gift support for the Wharton School.

As senior member of the Wharton External Affairs development team, s/he will develop gift opportunities and fundraising strategies; leading a team of ten (including two directors of regional development; five major gifts officers and three support staff) to secure leadership and transformational philanthropic commitments. S/He will contribute to the professional development of Wharton’s growing development department and lead/contribute to strategic discussions for domestic regions. In addition to serving an internal institutional role, the Senior Director will personally cultivate and steward a select, highly rated prospected pool of 150 individual donors and prospects.

Reporting into the Senior Executive Director of Development, the Senior Director works closely with the Dean, Vice Dean, and other senior administrators on a regular basis. Serves as a liaison with central development Gift Planning and is responsible for the School’s Hattersley Society, a stewardship program for individuals who have provided for Wharton’s future through life income, bequest and other estate and planned gifts.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will hold a BA/BS; seven to ten years of development experience, preferably in higher education including direct solicitation of major gifts; solid administrative experience including demonstrated ability to establish objectives, set performance standards, and organize a successful approach to achieving fundraising results; the capacity to work with significant degree of autonomy, and collaboratively, as part of a goal-oriented team is essential. A demonstrated ability to interact with faculty and CEO level contacts is a strongly desired. Experience in leading a team is highly desired as is the ability to plan and manage a department’s strategic plan and budget.

Extensive domestic travel required; some international travel. Must have valid passport from country of citizenship. Valid driver’s license required. This position will also involve some evenings/weekend/holiday work as needed.
