School/Center Overview

Information Systems & Computing (ISC) is the University of Pennsylvania’s central IT organization, providing infrastructure and services upon which Penn’s numerous Schools and Centers build their unique tools and capabilities. ISC’s 270-plus employees work closely with the University’s IT organizations in order to create, deliver and support products and services that help Schools and Centers operate efficiently and effectively. Application & Information Services (AIS), a unit within the Information Systems & Computing (ISC), works with University clients to plan, acquire, develop, and maintain core university-wide systems. The Sr. Application Developer will design, develop & support applications using our rapid application development framework and industry standard programming languages; actively participate in the design/architecture and development of new solutions as well as the refinement and optimization of existing code; propose solutions and resolve day-to-day technology needs for our clients; may deal directly with clients both internally within ISC and externally across the University.


Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of three years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstrated experience developing or supporting J2EE web applications and experience developing applications in a professional software development environment, utilizing the follow technical skill set: object-oriented design patterns and Java IDE – Eclipse or equivalent; Java Servlet programming build tools; creating unit tests using a tool such as JUnit and MVC framework such as Struts; working with a source code control system – CVS or equivalent; Hibernate, Apache, Tomcat, XML, HTML, Unix and PL/SQL. Previous experience working with Oracle databases; an understanding of user requirements and using them to generate software designs; knowledge of iterative software development, including frequent working software deliveries; familiarity with agile software development practices and methodologies. Must have experience and be comfortable working on mission critical, highly available applications. Experience with standards based APIs, especially including an enterprise service bus, highly desired. Prior experience working as a senior level developer in a high education institution is a plus.
