The mission of the Major Gifts Program is to raise major gifts 250K to 5 million plus for University priorities, with a focus on the undergraduate schools: Nursing, the School of Arts and Sciences, the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and Wharton. In addition, the program is charged with identifying and developing new major gift prospects and volunteer leadership for the Schools, Centers and University. Prospects assigned to the Major Gifts Program are largely comprised of undergraduate alumni, but also include parents of current undergraduate students.

Reporting to the Senior Associate Director of Major Gifts, the Assistant Director works in collaboration with the Senior Associate Director and other major gift officers in the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of donors. This will include making collaborative and one on one visits with unrated and or Major Gifts assigned prospects, as well as proposal writing, events management, and data management.

Specific Responsibilities

Manage a prospect pipeline of at least 200 names, with an emphasis on discovery visits and, as appropriate, in collaboration with major gift officers, with major gifts prospects. The goal of this position is to help develop a robust pipeline of prospects and donors who will support the University’s top priorities during the campaign and in years to come.
Cultivate, solicit and provide stewardship of prospects in assigned territories and cities throughout the United States with an emphasis on increasing their financial commitment to the Penn Fund and all University priorities, emphasizing maximizing their lifetime giving to the University via a donor centric philosophy.
Using excellent time management and logistics skills, plan efficient and cost effective travel to multiple locations throughout country, maximizing number of visits to prospects and donors while traveling.
Research and prepare sustaining and major gift proposals to individuals.
Work with other development staff across the University to identify new prospects with emphasis in strategic priorities and regions.
Work in partnership with Penn Fund, School and Centers, and other University departments to ensure cultivation and solicitation of prospects on behalf of University priorities.
Collaborate with Alumni Relations and regional major gift officers on broader programs in the assigned regions.
Prepare event bios and briefing materials for faculty and administrators.
Respond to routine inquiries on gift opportunities and determine appropriate follow up.
Assume primary responsibility for special projects as assigned.


Bachelor’s Degree required. Minimum of 1-3 years’ experience in development, or related field. Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Have an innate willingness to dig in and contribute in a team orientated environment. Pride yourself on the quality of work and have a strong attention to details. Familiarity with the University of Pennsylvania and its constituencies helpful. Must be willing to travel often and work occasional evenings and weekends. Valid driver’s license required.
