The World’s First Business School

In 1881, American entrepreneur and industrialist Joseph Wharton established the world’s first collegiate school of business at the University of Pennsylvania.

Wharton’s pioneering vision was to produce graduates who would become ‘pillars of the state, whether in private or in public life.’ The Wharton School maintains a long tradition of educating visionary business leaders in academia, business, government, and not-for-profit organizations.

Today, Wharton has expanded the scope of this vision to become the most comprehensive source of business knowledge in the world – with over 225 faculty members, 95,000 alumni, 5,000 students across 10 academic departments, 20 research centers, and more than 9,000 executive education participants annually.


The Application Architect is responsible for writing software as specified by economists in the development of the PPI economic simulation model and handling the interaction between model end users and the model itself. The incumbent is in charge of modifying the program to fit the needs of PPI researchers. The Application Architect will create custom runs and alter the way a program works at the request of the PPI team. He/she will be asked to create C# and Python packages and modules to implement a large-scale economic/financial model. Other responsibilities include designing custom applications, developing, testing and debugging. The incumbent will be asked to work closely with the faculty head and researchers as they develop and present their research to government and business leaders. The Wharton Public Policy Initiative was created to bridge the gap between government and business through research on areas that are in both’s best interest. The incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines.

Position is contingent on continued funding.


A Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of 4 years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. At least 4 years of economic modeling experience is preferred. The successful candidate will have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in computer science or related fields such as engineering or mathematics. Five or more years of C#, C++, C regressing, Java, JavaScript, Python, Visual Basic, and FORTRAN, including the ability to think in an objected-oriented way. Applicant should have prior experience with software development and release of commercial software products. It is helpful to have some undergraduate economic classes or familiarity with statistics, and a knowledge of Sql server and/or Mysql. It is also advantageous if applicant has experience working with JavaScript and related libraries/ platforms such as jQuery, Ember.js, AngularJS or Backbone.js. Tax programming a plus.
