School/Center Overview

The Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania is the oldest and one of the finest medical schools in the United States. Penn is rich in tradition and heritage and at the same time consistently at the forefront of new developments and innovations in medical education and research. Since its founding in 1765 the School has been a strong presence in the community and prides itself on educating the leaders of tomorrow in patient care, biomedical research, and medical education.


The coordinator will collaborate with the leadership of the Penn Memory Center to develop, implement, and monitor the Penn Memory Center’s multi-cultural recruitment and retention with a particular focus on African American participants, and to support education and training programs. This individual is a joint staff member of the Outreach and Recruitment Core, Research Education Core and the Clinical Core of Penn’s National Institute of Health funded ADCC; and will lead the outreach work of Penn’s CDC funded Penn Healthy Brain Research Center.

The coordinator will develop an overall plan that will achieve the Center’s goals for subject recruitment and retention for research studies such as the National Alzheimer’s Coordinating Center longitudinal cohort for older adults with normal cognition, mild cognitive impairment, and Alzheimer’s disease. This plan will have a particular emphasis on the participation of African American participants. The coordinator will plan, execute, and monitor activities that achieve yearly recruitment and retention goals. These activities include performing selected research assessments; giving presentations to lay audiences; recruiting participants into research; meeting with community leaders; and creating brain health and other engagement programs for research participants and community members. This work will require travel in Philadelphia region to deliver talks, attend and host events, and meet with community leaders. The individual will work closely with the Director of Outreach and Recruitment Core to form partnerships with local community leaders/organizations and design, implement and administer innovative brain health programs in promoting cognitive health in West Philadelphia. This plan includes identifying opportunities for collaboration, recruitment and engaging African Americans in discussion about research participation and cognitive health, the advancement of the and programs. This individual will participate in the development and strategic planning of recruiting and retaining African American participants, supervision of research interns, and securing funding for support. The coordinator will supervise undergraduate and masters level interns working on projects related to recruitment and retention, diversity, public health and cognitive health and impairment.


The minimum of a Bachelor’s degree and 3 years to 5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience are required. Coursework, training and/or work experience in public health required. MPH is a plus.
