School/Center Overview

The School of Arts and Sciences forms the foundation of the scholarly excellence that has established Penn as one of the world’s leading research universities. We teach students across all 12 Penn schools, and our academic departments span the reach from anthropology and biology to sociology and South Asian studies.


Reporting to the Director of Stewardship, and in collaboration with major gift officers, the Assistant Director of Stewardship will serve as a writer and key contributor as part of the School’s comprehensive stewardship program. The Assistant Director will be responsible for drafting and compiling stewardship reports and acknowledgment letters for individual, corporate, and foundation donors. The Assistant Director will also be responsible for drafting scholarship reports as part of the University’s annual scholarship reporting process, as well drafting other stewardship reports throughout the year. The position involves interaction with faculty, administrators, and undergraduate and graduate students throughout the School of Arts and Sciences.

Duties include:
Generate clear, concise, and compelling acknowledgments, correspondence, reports, and other written communications to donors on behalf of the dean, vice dean, and major gifts staff.
Draft scholarship reports as part of yearly scholarship reporting process
Work with development staff, faculty, administrators, and students to gather accurate and timely information for stewardship reports and letters supporting a range of School priorities
Prepare other special correspondence and written communications as needed for the dean, vice dean, and major gifts staff
*Perform additional duties as assigned to support the School’s stewardship program and stewardship team


Bachelor’s degree with 3 to 5 years of experience in stewardship/development writing, preferably in higher education, required.
The successful candidate must have exceptional written, oral communication, and proofreading skills. Writing samples are required.
A high level of attention to detail and strong organizational skills, with a proven ability to manage and execute multiple projects, meet deadlines and track progress and activities.
The position will also require strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact and communicate clearly with staff, faculty, and donors.
Candidates must also have the ability to work effectively in a large, complex institutional setting and as a member of a team.
Excellent word-processing skills in a Windows environment and knowledge of databases, spreadsheets, and contact management systems.
