The Office of Parent Outreach and Development (Penn Parents) is the central resource for connecting undergraduate parents and families to the University. Through events, communications, volunteer opportunities and The Parents Fund, the Penn Parents team is committed to building relationships and creating avenues for parents to feel informed and connected and to be uniquely involved in the life of the University.

Reporting to the Senior Associate Director of Parent Outreach and Development, the Assistant Director is responsible for engaging parents and encouraging philanthropy from families of Penn’s undergraduate students. The primary objective of this position is to secure/renew leadership commitments to The Parents Fund and identify and qualify viable major gift donors for the University.

The primary objective of this position is to secure/renew leadership commitments to The Parents Fund and identify and qualify viable major gift donors for the University.
* Establish and manage relationships with approximately 300 non-alumni couples from the undergraduate parent population, including some parents of alumni. Identify, cultivate, solicit and steward leadership gifts. This position will focus on leadership annual giving to The Parents Fund, but will also be responsible for managing relations with select prospects toward multiyear, restricted gifts.

* Complete 100 solicitations for leadership gifts to The Parents Fund with an emphasis on multi-year leadership commitments. Specific prospect giving dollar goals will be set each year based on prospect pool review.

* Conduct 50-75 prospect/donor visits each year locally and in select markets nationally.

* Analyze and synthesize parent data to determine a strategy to successfully engage, solicit and track his/her prospect pool.

* Assist with the planning and execution of a multifaceted cultivation, solicitation and stewardship program to increase giving at the Family Founders level ($10K+ annually).

* This position will assist with the development of fundraising communications, solicitations, social media activity, website materials and event strategies in support of The Parents Fund.

* Recruit families to join the Penn Parents Council

* Work closely with the Fund Leadership Committee of the Penn Parents Council, including recruiting members, participating in meetings and conference calls, and providing support for volunteer engagement and performance.

* Assist with the development of an approach for soliciting special sub-populations within the parent population such as alumni parents, parents of graduating seniors, past parents, and parents who are faculty or staff at the University.

* Partner with DAR colleagues on small and large parent cultivation events.

* Develop relationships with colleagues across the University and serve as a liaison for Parent Outreach and Development efforts.

* Work in collaboration with the Parent Outreach and Development team to create, implement and assess select parent engagement events (i.e., New Parent and Family Orientation, Family Weekend, Alumni Weekend and Commencement, welcome receptions).

* Work collaboratively with other members of the Parent Outreach and Development team in support of collective goals and objectives.


• Bachelor’s degree required
• Minimum of 1-3 years of experience working in a fundraising or related position
• Knowledge of higher education and experience working with a parent population is preferred
• Experience in individual giving, including identifying, qualifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding individual donors
• Ability to confidently solicit leadership gifts on the telephone in a tactful but persistent manner.
• Ability to demonstrate high professional and ethical standards, confidentiality, sensitivity, diplomacy, and sound judgement in all interactions
• Ability to excel and work independently within a complex, goals-oriented environment
• Exceptional interpersonal and communication (oral and written) skills.
• Proficiency with computer software applications and databases including the Microsoft Office Suite.
• Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with staff, colleagues, and senior administrators and faculty within the Undergraduate Programs team, DAR and the broader University. Must also have demonstrated success in working with volunteers.
• Ability to travel, work evenings/weekend
• Valid driver’s license is required
