School/Center Overview
Duties

Biostatistics and Informatics Administration:
The incumbent administers, oversees, and evaluates the Center’s Biostatistics and Informatics Core including (1) monitoring progression of projects; (2) evaluating achievement of the project objectives; (3) developing, implementing, and evaluating internal review processes designed to ensure the scientific integrity and merit of health services research proposals; and (4) supervising the work of postdoctoral fellows, graduate and undergraduate students, data analysts, and master’s level statisticians. The incumbent may also participate in the academic and governance programs by serving on the Research and subcommittees or specialized teams for which s/he is qualified. S/he will also collaborate with fellow scientists and share resources and expertise for the benefit of the overall program.
Consults on Scientific and Technical Issues:
The incumbent applies expertise in the content areas of health services research methodology and program evaluation to develop, implement, and analyze local, regional, and national research initiatives designed to improve health care. The incumbent reviews and evaluates health services research proposals to provide guidance regarding relevance and significance to sponsors’ priorities, assessing the value of projects’ objectives and to encourage alignment of activities towards the achievement CHERP’s strategic goals. S/he reviews new and revised proposals for completeness, provides research investigators with guidance related to sponsor’s policies, procedures, and guidelines, and make recommendations. The incumbent serves as a liaison to connect investigators to relevant CHERP core resources available to strengthen developing proposals. The incumbent must analyze information and data from various sources in order to present technical and scientific aspects of research applications to CHERP leadership and review committees with tentative recommendations of possible action.
Conducts Scientific Studies/Surveys/Investigations:
The incumbent collaborates with other investigators at the local, regional, and national level to advance the fields of health services and health equity research by conceptualizing, developing, and implementing novel and innovative research studies with broad implications for health care. S/he collaborates with other investigators on major independently funded studies that represent a significant segment of the Center’s health services research and development program. Additionally, s/he will have a wide range of responsibilities in providing data management and statistical expertise including (1) managing, analyzing, and interpreting data collected from administrative databases, surveys and other data sources; (2) applying statistical methods to provide inferences and information for the fields of health services and statistics for development of research proposals, power and sample size calculations and co-authoring manuscripts; (3) conducting primary and secondary analysis of existing databases, including VA/non-VA medical systems, vital and health statistics, cross-sectional surveys, retrospective and prospective cohort studies and case control studies; and (4) evaluating the reliability of source information, adjust and weight raw data, and organize results into the format necessary for computer analysis.

Qualifications

A PhD degree, preferably in biostatistics, and 5 to 7 years of experience required. Background in mathematics, statistics, biostatistics, epidemiology, psychometrics, or related area required. Knowledge and application of complex quantitative and qualitative research methodologies and statistical methods, particularly in the area of health services research and research program evaluation in order to work collaboratively to develop and evaluate health services research projects; skill in the performance of analytical studies, interpretation of results, coordination of analysis of research findings, and the design of effective interventions to reduce or eliminate health disparities in care required. Ability to work effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary team required. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in both written and spoken English required. Position is contingent upon funding.
