School/Center Overview
Duties

The Clinical Research Financial Specialist, Sr. is an integral member of the Office of Clinical Research (OCR) in the Perelman School of Medicine and reports to the Director of Finance in the OCR. The Clinical Financial Specialist, Sr. is responsible for:
Coordinating operational and administrative efforts with senior departmental administration and central offices for the initiation, development, and execution of clinical research proposals and administrative management of the executed industry sponsored contracts; Leading budget development for clinical research studies. This will require collaboration with Investigators, study teams and other University offices to ensure accurate and timely study specific budgets are created; Reviewing, processing, and approving industry-sponsored clinical research proposals in Penn-ERA and working closely with departmental grant and business administrators to resolve open issues and facilitate the approval process within department time frames; Reviewing and approving requests for Research accounts, such as Research Billing Numbers, research study and research guarantor accounts, while ensuring the necessary documents are consistent and complete before study activation in EPIC; Responsible for completing and managing post award activities, including research patient care cost allocations, expenditure rates, and residual balance analysis and transfers/refunds; Responsible for providing support for the Finance Unit in the operations of granting access to internally developed research applications, and creation of research accounts; Communicates with Department and Research Teams on the approval process of research patient care costs and monitor open balances to evaluate timely responses; Assist in the development, design, and implementation of training materials, such as e-learning modules, Tip Sheets, and webinars in collaboration with EPIC collaborators.

Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree and 3 years to 5 years of experience in finance, billing or accounting, or equivalent combination of education and experience required. Masters degree preferred; Working knowledge of medical terminology and medical billing is preferred; Knowledge of federal regulations related to clinical research and experience working in an administrative setting preferred; Must work well as part of a project team and have strong analytical, spreadsheet, and database skills; Excellent communication and effective writing skills are a must.
