School/Center Overview

Under limited guidance of the PI, the Research Project Manager A will coordinate and plan all logistics of new and ongoing research projects that use social media data to explore health topics and outcomes. This will at a minimum be 4-5 research projects, with the possibility of more as new projects are identified. The project manager will be responsible for project outcomes in addition to participating in ongoing project research. This position will involve supervising the project personnel with duties including, but not limited to: supervising & determining workload & assignments for direct reports and temporary workers; overseeing hiring; designing, executing and leading orientation and training programs, that are specific to a hire’s skill set, educational preparation, and prior professional experience; and working closely with the PI on issues of performance management for project staff. The project manager will assign work and provide guidance to the Big Data Analyst position and coordinate and ensure up-to-date staff certification and licensure. This position will also oversee recruitment and screening of potential study participants as specified per protocol and develop and primarily manage large research databases. The incumbent will coordinate the development of a new research website for study recruitment, study data dissemination, study progress, and study feedback. S/he will identify web vendors, develop and submit scope of work documents, interact with the vendors, submit and review the scope with PI and Penn legal, work with Penn IT on website integration and compliance with Penn policies, complete and oversee all phases of website testing, integration, and maintenance. Oversee the IRB process including preparing and processing all Institutional Review Board (IRB) documentation through the IRB, submissions, continuing reviews, amendments and adverse event reporting. S/he is responsible for resolving regulatory related queries with IRB and NIH and obtaining records required to complete case report forms. The incumbent must demonstrate vigilance in patient safety, protocol compliance, and data quality. This position will primarily coordinate with other departments and external stakeholders to facilitate collaboration, initiate and implement research projects, plan and execute multi-organization conferences, manage grant budgets, and oversee all aspects of a large NIH grant. Oversee coordination, submission, and management of subsequent grants submitted to NIH and other Foundation funders. Prepare grant applications & interim reports, contribute to UPenn, regional, and national presentations & peer-reviewed publications. This position will report to the Principle Investigator.


A Bachelor’s Degree and 3 to 5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience in health-related research is required. Effective communication and writing skills; ability to effectively multitask and problem solve; demonstrated ability to work as part of a team as well as independently; knowledge of IRB and human research protection regulations; and strong organizational and time management skills required. Must possess strong computer skills and be able to work independently. Proficiency in MS office suite, REDCap, and NVivo required. Experience with social media research required. Experience supervising a team of diverse individuals required. Action-oriented and ability to effectively prioritize strongly preferred.
